new york... finally!

sorry for the delay... i've been quite busy.

this past summer (specifically at the end of july), i actually went on a summer vacation. it was the first real one since 2009. i went to new york for a wedding and a summer break. new york is not ideal for a summer vacation as it is excruciatingly hot. definitely not the weather for two spoiled, girly californians. i had a wedding to go to in lewiston, upstate new york. my dear dear muffin was getting hitched. and my lovely cousin came as my date.
lewiston is next to niagara falls. and we were very excited about seeing the falls. it was quite humid and cloudy at first, but the sun eventually came out and it was beautiful. we went on one of the tours and our bus broke down in the middle of the tour even though they promised we'd be through with the tour in time to get to the hotel and get ready for the rehearsal dinner. during the tour, we ran into ness and tahu who i haven't seen in ages! they too were coming for the wedding. if you look closely (or just click on the image with the terrapin point horseshoe falls sign) at the picture on the left, you'll see ness with her little ones and tahu walking along.
we eventually left the tour before it was over. at least we saw most of the sights.
the wedding was fabulous and conveniently located across the street from the hotel we were staying at. the after party was also a lot of fun. it was at a bar outside of the reception and next to the lake. the next day, debbie and i left for new york city. and the lovely bride and groom left for france very soon after.

happy chinese new year!!

tonight was the grand opening of the new xanh restaurant now located at 110 castro in downtown mt. view.
this year is the year of the brown rat. i think it's the earth rat. as it was the 7th in china earlier today, many celebrate the new year tonight. as i am celebrating the new year with my family this weekend, i choose to start my celebration at the new xanh. the picture on the left is the lounge. there is a wall of water on rocks. it's really cool. they now have a full bar with specialty drinks. i hope to become a cocktail waitress here. when it gets warmer.
there are 6 new plates. we had three of them and one of the two new desserts. they now have vietnamese desserts. they also have pho on their menu, as an appetizer. everything was delicious, as always. i was there on monday (two nights ago in my purple dress below) and what a difference! while both places are very hip and trendy, this new place allows for more space between tables and is at a grand scale of hip & trendy. bathrooms always say a lot about how i feel about a restaurant. i remember nice bathrooms. and their bathrooms are totally awesome, except their locks. they are a little tricky...

the night started off at burger meister in north beach on the way to bimbo's. unfortunately, we found ourselves sitting by the most obnoxious douche bags from the marina. i don't even think they were drunk. not that its an excuse for being obnoxious but it happens. not them. they were totally annoying. we hated them. so did the rest of the patrons there. we ended up staying longer than we should have.

we head over to bimbo's close to 8p. i love bimbo's. it's really a great venue. small enough where the musicians themselves are walking about. that's where i met david gedge from cinerama/wedding present. the sound is awesome. the ambiance is much better than the other venues. you can't beat the girl in the fish bowl either. it's so quaint. and the ladies restrooms are monitored by the coolest lady ever. the only problem is that it's cash only. but there are plenty of atms around so no biggie.

we got there early and scored a nice table off on the side right next to the bar. perfect location if you ask me. it was also a good spot for people watching, more like, stalker spotting. we saw a girl in a hideous dress stalking ramesh and then the rest of the band members. i'm happy to report that, thanks to my awestrickeness when it comes to rock stars that i can only blurt out one thing (along the lines of... i love your music). and then i'm gone.

the opening band was called new division. i overheard someone say that they were supposed to be like joy division. um, wrong division. they were nothing like joy division or any of their one songs. they were all over the place. one song was like toad the wet sprocket, another song was very 80's. the first song was ok but they went downhill after that. they kinda sucked. it's a harsh world out there and i'm not one for pacifying.

voxtrot started off great, as usual. their energy on stage was comparable to the energy in their songs. very jumpy and upbeat. especially their bass player, 70's guy who looks like a cross between topher grace and alex's german bf. more like topher grace though. then, towards the end (thankfully) their ratings fell rapidly. these slutty hags went up on stage and started dancing on stage. not only were they drunk & ugly, they were horrid dancers. ugh, in cheap grotesque sequins dresses. to keep this post brief, voxtrot allowed the sluts to stay on stage and did not seem to realize that we paid to see them, not stupid ugly old dancing sluts on stage. so we left.

while i was just at bimbo's no more than 5 days before the stars show, i hadn't seen torquil campbell perform since the memphis show which was earlier this year in may. not too long ago. having two doses of the torq is quite nice actually. another wouldn't be too bad.

torq campbell started off as a child star and still works as an actor. i saw him on sex & the city. he was also on a couple of law & order episodes, which i love love to watch. it makes me like him even more. hardly possible. anyway, more about torq later.

we get there and there are flowers all over the stage. not on the floor but on their instruments sticking out where ever flowers could stick out. lloyd cole opened the stars show. he used to sing with the commotions (i think). he went solo in the early 90's and i actually have his album (don't get weird on me, babe). there's this one song that i loved. it was why i bought the cd. it was called she's a girl and i'm a man. very catchy. alas, he didn't play it. however, he did play are you ready to be heartbroken? in which camera obscura (ro reminded me of this) has a song called lloyd, i'm ready to be heartbroken based off lloyd cole's song. cool, huh? i was really impressed with lloyd cole. even after all these years, he still really rocks. and doesn't look too bad either.

now, this is my fourth time seeing stars. and they just get better and better every time i see them. the thing you don't hear on the album is torq's passion. he sings with overwhelming passion that you can almost see it ooze out of him on the stage. he's jumping around and so completely into the music. he's also very funny and uber cool. both alex and i decided that we love him. words cannot describe the extent of his coolness. also, amy millan has one of the loveliest voices. i adore her voice. and at first, she didn't stand out quite as much as torq but you can tell she got more comfortable. the played most of the songs off the new album and the last one. i think the oldest song they played was on peak hill(right?). my first fav song by them is the very thing, but i don't think they've ever played it live. :(

they did two encores. the last one, torq convinced (very easily) most of the audience standing to sit down. it was like story time in elementary school all over again. and really awesome. that was a first. as for the flowers from the beginning, during their set towards the end, they threw them out to the audience. no one does that either.

hot hot heat with chris

last thursday, i went to popscene with alex (who hadn't been there for over a year) and cousin nina. it was popscene's 11th anniversary party so they had a special guest band, hot hot heat. we'd seen hot hot heat there before and it was a great show. we were really excited about seeing them again. the only thing i wasn't excited about was the line that would probably reach to the end of the block. as these kinds of bands do at such small venues. luckily, nina offered to wait in line for us at 9p. alex and i got there shortly after 9:30p and as usual, i tried flirting my way in to avoid the line. fortunately, the boys know me and it worked. they also know that i sort of have a thing with chris (not exactly sure what it is yet), with whom they tease me about, incessantly. i suppose i can't blame them. that's what i get for making out with him in public.

after waiting at the front and saying how scary the line is, they tell me, you don't have to worry about the line. i call nina up to the front. i asked jorge to get chris so i can say hi to him. jorge returns sans chris and tells me that chris told him to take care of me. what a sweetie. *sigh* meaning, chris is allowed two guests, there are 3 of us so it's a 3 for 1 deal on top of hopping the line. it was $13 for the 3 of us. that's actually cheaper cover than a regular popscene night! score!

we also got in before 10p! i love popscene... we go over to say hello to jessica, have some drinks with josh and then more drinks with jason. chris walked by a few times before i finally i was able to say thanks to him. he's really busy working and still, he sits down to chat with us. he's seriously the sexiest thing ever. i hadn't seen him since our date on labor day. i'm really itching for another make out session with him. but he's too busy. :( at one point, i surprised him from behind when i went over to have a little chat with jason about chris. and i got a few kisses out of him but i wanted more.

finally, chris gets the ok and we head to the back. we're a little less conspicuous about our making out these days. especially since he was working and all. i'm not sure if this was before or after hot hot heat came on. but i didn't recognize any of their songs until the end when they started playing the old stuff. we snagged a table in the back so we couldn't see much but we could hear them fine. i couldn't pay much attention with chris walking back and forth in front of me. after the band, we hit the dance floor. we were dancing as usual and there were these guys dancing near us. i was a little drunk and found myself dancing with this one guy. his name was bernie. he's 35 y/o and moving to new york. he said he lived in san francisco for 10 years. he told me he thought i was 24 but noticed that i knew the words to all the songs he knew. when i told him how old i was, it made sense to him. he also told me he thought i was the cutest thing. very sweet. he also told me that i danced very well. i don't even know how long we danced. i didn't notice anything around me, like chris. both alex and nina saw chris walk by as i danced with bernie.

it was late and we had to get going. so, alex got our coat check stuff and i was saying goodbye to bernie. he asked to see me again. gave me his card and phone number. he was really very sweet. after seeing bernie off, i looked for chris to say goodbye to him. just as i turned around, there he was, walking towards me. he pulled me inside the bar, asked me if i was drunk and we made out for a bit. i'm not sure if it was because i was a little drunk but he seemed really into it. i mean, he's usually into it but more than usual. it was nice. :D maybe seeing me dance with bernie was a good thing? anyhow, i don't know how long i was there with him but i heard the djs announce closing time. oh shit, it's 3am?!? alex wanted to leave by 1! so off i went. and off the three of us went to go home. except, we had to drop nina off at her friend's place and we got lost getting back on 101. we ended up by the golden gate and was finally on our way home. i think it was close to 4a when we got back to mt. view.

i got up around 7:30a and caught the train in mt. view. the train that i've been missing all week because i can't get my ass up early enough to get it at 7:45a in san jose. yet, on 3 hours of sleep (a wee nap), i made it into work on time. and i'm there all day. that is pretty ridiculous, isn't it?

today, about 12 hours ago, my dear friend alex (muffin) submitted her dissertation. this is a huge deal and very exciting! congrats alex! ♥

we are the pipettes

this was my second time at the rickshaw stop. i saw the silversun pickups there with lou & ro back in october. and yes, there is an actual rickshaw there. the opening was monster bobby who is part of the pipettes, well their back up band (according to wikipedia which may or may not be true). i liked his voice but couldn't really hear him too well.

the second opening was this band called smoosh. they were the female equivalent of hansen, except, they rock! i was so amazed and a bit shocked. they were so cute and talented. it's not everyday that you see an 8 y/o bass player. they also did a cover of bloc party's modern love which was most impressive. i thoroughly enjoyed these young ladies.

the only problem with the rickshaw is, upstairs, it gets really hot. i suppose heat rises but damn, it was damn hot upstairs. and that's where the seats are. so, that's where alex and i was. at this show, almost everyone was wearing polka dots. had i known that was their thing, i still wouldn't have worn polka dots. heh. i'm glad i didn't wear polka dots.

i really enjoyed the pipettes. they are super cool. only the coolest musicians have their own theme song (like tom mullaney, heehee). they also all wear polka dotted dresses that have the same pattern (fabric) with different styles. for example, one is a halter top dress, one dress has sleeves and the last one is strapless. all three sing and dance. and maneuver around and across the stage very carefully. it was immensely entertaining. they sing together as well as separately. it's refreshing to see a band take the time to put on a show for you. i'm so used to bands just standing there and playing their instruments. i enjoy myself so much more when i see bands get into their music. it makes me get into their music. but when they put together a dance routine, that's like the cherry on top!

love at first sight with voxtrot ♥

when i first saw voxtrot over a year ago, i don't think i realized the impression they left on me. i've yet to experience love at first sight (that i can remember) with a man but i know, i did in fact experience it with voxtrot. it's sort of this helpless feeling that's come over you. when your jaw drops and you can't pay attention to your good friend who is talking at you because you froze just to keep the moment going a bit longer. right? well, that was me at the elefant show last year.

since last may, i've seen voxtrot twice. so, it would have been 4 times in one year short of 3 days. and more if they played more shows. i can't seem to get enough. their debut album came out last week and they are touring to promote their cd. i love their eps so i'm hoping i'll love the cd. it's still warming up to me.
after work, i got a ride with alex and got ready at her place in mt. view. then, betty and gillie came to pick us up. the show started earlier than usual. we left at 7p so we wouldn't miss au revoir simone and get a balcony seat upstairs. we had dinner there. it was a lot of bad food like nachos piled up a mountain high (a mini mountain anyway), cheesy fries and quesadillas.

au revoir simone were these three very homely-looking girls. alex made them honorary sociologists as they were sporting the hairdos of female sociologists (well stanford sociologists). all three of them sing and play synthesizers. so it was very electronic. there was one with glasses who was really rocking out. she was the only one! alex chatted with her later when we were purchasing our merchandise. she was quite lively and nice.

the second opening band sucked. they were called sound team. there were some tall band members and that's all i remember about them. i hope that wasn't too harsh.

before voxtrot, i went downstairs to pick up a copy of their new cd. and buttons for one and all. they were 50 cents each but he didn't charge me for them! i think it was because i had on a voxtrot shirt from the last show. the band started with songs from the new album. i will post my blurry pics from my camera phone later. their set was as expected. tons of energy. rocking out. arms wailing. jumping/dancing. they are so animated that you couldn't help but move along with them. so we were all up from our seats dancing on the balcony floor and shaking it up!

i can't wait for their next show!

we drift away with torquil

if you are a fan of the canadian band stars, you should know that torquil campbell is in this other band called memphis. i saw them this past week at café du nord in castro.

we had dinner reservations just for the seats. and at this age (because we are so old), it's something we can appreciate. that is, not stand all night. plus, i see much better with seats. otherwise, i don't see at all. the only catch to reservations is the $15 minimum per person. since we planned on spending at least $15 on drinks anyway, it was an easy minimum. the only thing that sucks about this place is parking. i thought i had secret parking at the mortuary but to my disappointment, it was closed. ugh. we eventually found some restaurant parking just down the street.

the postmarks opened for memphis, and i was pleasantly surprised. their lead singer, tim yehezkely has this lovely sweet and soothing singing voice. it doesn't really match her. on their website, her look makes me think of the 60's mod style with her long straight hair and dark outfits. i was expecting that at the show. but, she showed up in jeans and a t-shirt. not attractive at all. very plain and homely looking. in other words, kinda ugly. however, their set was very good. i guess that's all that matters. the music, right? i don't know, i think it helps to have the rock star image down. especially if you are one. yes?

i was again happily surprised when memphis came on. i've always enjoyed the stars shows. torquil campbell is quite the firecracker. he reminds me of me! heehee. not only is he funny and clever, he's also very personable. he talks to the audience like he's your friend. you want to be friends with him. his live performances have improved as well, not that he was bad before. he wasn't. he's just gotten better. he's got a very distinguished voice. it can be soft and rock at the same time. what can i say, he's awesome.

after the show, i went and bought the new memphis cd. we got hooked up with free posters too! what a great end to the night! free posters, woo hoo!

memorable valentine's days

last night, i went to xanh to pick up some calamari & garlic noodles for a valentine's day potluck i was going to. i went to grab a truffucino from red rock café across the way while they were getting the food ready. at the cashier, there was this sign on their tip jar. it read please contribute to the s.a.d. fund (singles appreciation day). it was a little depressing to see that because being single isn't sad. it's kinda lucky sometimes.

the potluck was just with the ladies. and it was much fun. the food was yummy. we had this delightful chicken that was flavorful and moist. we had bread and salad. the calamari and garlic noodles i picked up. kir royales and bubbly. lots of random conversations about what rochambeau means and associations with the "junk in the box" song. it was quite entertaining.

afterwards, it made me think about past v-days and i couldn't really remember any. then i remembered the time my ex and i broke up on v-day of 2001. and i moved back here two weeks later. there was also the time i got into my first major car accident on v-day of 1992 because i drove my lame ex-bff thao vu in the pouring rain to eastridge just so she could pick up her paycheck. yes, we hate her.

yeah, i'm not a big fan of v-day. but i ♥ my muffin ladies!

back log - the 4th, blocked tear duct, & a baby shower!

4th of july

i spent independence day at muffin's new pad with sir gb. they had a grill going out on their balcony which is on a corner and faces the street. so there's no one next to you. it was quite nice actually. getting there was a little bit of an adventure as my friends(betty & gillie) & i got lost getting to her apartment. the food was very yummy and i met some cool new people i could go dancing with. heehee. all in all, it was a nice low key event. we saw some fireworks but it doesn't seem to impress me like it used to. i just wasn't interested. i think the food was distracting me. food or fireworks? food or fireworks? i took food.

eye update

it's been nearly a year since i had my intubation, i went back to the opthalmologist last week for a check up. i thought i was just going to have surgery and get it over with. but there were some problems... he said i had three options. they are:

1- some sort of balloon intubation where they stick a tube inside my tear duct that is blown up to stretch the tear duct. but he said that procedure almost never works. so, scratch that.

2- do another intubation. last year, the tube was too tight and rather than leaving it in my eye for a few months, it was there for a few weeks. initially, i felt drainage so i was excited that it was working. but the tightness created problems. my eye started to get infected and my tear ducts were getting stretched and droopy.

3- the last option is surgery. he'd open up the side of my nose and make an incision to try to stretch out my tear ducts. the problem here is that my condition isn't that bad. and apparently not ideal for surgery. if i went through it, i would end up with a scar on my face, which is likely to become infected since the area we are dealing with isn't sterile (my nose) and that would make the scarring worse. plus, it may not even work! ugh.

we talked it over some more and i decided on doing the intubation again. i don't think i posted in detail the whole procedure. i guess i said it didn't hurt but it really did. in fact, it was a bit traumatizing. although, now that i've been through it, i know what to expect and it may not be so bad the second time around. so, the plan is to leave it in for 4 months instead of 3 weeks. the procedure is scheduled for august 2nd. wish me luck!

my cousin's baby shower

this past sunday, my cousins (proud parents-to-be debbie & roger) had a baby shower. they are expecting a baby girl. it's very very exciting. they got married last september and were together for over 9 years before that! as they are still attached at the hips, they have been very much in love for the entire time. it's refreshing to see that kind of love still exists.

i was asked to make tiramisu and cream puffs and bring drinks. well, i was a little overzealous with the alcohol. i bought a case of champagne and two bottles were barely touched. i spent most of saturday (until well in the am) trying to finish baking the cream puffs (baking them in my mini convection oven was 30 minutes for every 9-10 cream puff, i made 40) and the tiramisu. which was a total disaster! i had total of ten tubs of marscapone cheese. out of the ten, only two was good. the rest came out curdled. i'd never been so frustrated at 4am before. on two hours of sleep, i woke up early to get more marscapone cheese to make at least a batch of it for the shower. out of the four, i purchased that morning, only two worked. so i had 13 single servings of tiramisu for about 30 people. oh well. thank goodnes for my sister who came over to help me finish up with the cream puffs. the custard didn't turn out for that so we put cool whip inside with strawber- ries. oh yeah, i cut my thumb (while cutting the strawberries) and smashed my index finger closing a door on it. all on the same hand. at least it was my left hand.

there were fun games, good food, and great people. kelly was also there for it. she sat with us in our "winning" table. each one of us (even though i was the last one to win something) got picked for prize from a game. i will post more pics when i upload them from my camera. despite everything, i had a wonderful time!

they are a lovely couple and i'm so very excited for them! congrats debbie & roger! i ♥ you both!!

spike's graduation party!

on saturday, spike had her long-awaited-not-quite-done graduation party. her parents dr. tom & kathy drove across the country to be with her on her special day.

there was a lot of good food, drinks, and 4 different cakes... mmm. i think the carrot cake was my fav. it was a lot of fun. nice to catch up with some people i hadn't seen in a while. both betty and i were happy to be a part of it. congrats muffin!

stars and death cab

last night we went to santa clara university to their leavey center to see death cab. stars opened for them but sounded terrible! the vocals were so low, we could hardly hear the words in the songs. which was a total bummer for me, i really like them. fortunately, i've seen them live twice and actually met both torquil campbell and amy millan, who were both very nice.

it was quite an adventure to find betty last night sans cell phone. she came solo as well. she called me 20 to 7p saying she was on her way but that she might stop home and that she would look out for us. i hoped she'd be there by the time we got there but not to my surprise, she didn't get there until after 8p. luckily, she ran into louis (avec une cell phone) and was able to contact me. we met up outside after the show.

it was my first time seeing death cab for cutie. they played songs from all albums including moviescript ending which was the first song i heard from them. the sound was a lot better than stars so i'm not sure what exactly it was, the band or the venue that screwed up earlier. ben gibbard truly has a great voice. it was a pretty good show despite the dry refreshments and obnoxious undergraduates...

combat baby

last night, we went to see metric at slim's. it was a sold out show. even the balcony area we love to settle ourselves in was completely booked and blocked off for ticket holders with dinner reservations. kinda like largo but that's never happened at slim's before...

they had two unnecessary opening bands so by the time metric started, it was past 11p. my feet were killing me from wearing my high heels, so i could see better but who was i kidding? making me just over 5 feet doesn't do me any good with men like ted, 6 feet plus towering over me. oh well, i tried.

after 3 tom collins and two bands that sucked, i was ready to go. then metric came on and i didn't recognize any of the songs. but the singer, emily, has a very lovely voice. it was nice to hear her sing live despite the one song we knew which we (excluding ted) were just waiting to hear. finally they played combat baby and that was our que to visit alex's toothless boyfriend at the crepe truck. alas, when we got there, he'd gone but we still got our savory crepes! they were delicious after midnight on a cold and drizzly day.

ted finally showed up after metric finished 7 more songs after we went for crepes to take us home. i crashed as soon as i got into my seat. overall, metric sounded great live. emily haines has an awesome voice. and despite not being able to see her funky dance at the keyboards (as told to me by ted) and standing in really uncomfortable shoes (we meant to be sitting upstairs) for about 4 or so hours straight, it was a good show.

death cab and muffin spa day @ bliss

on sunday, death cab for cutie tickets went on sale at 10am online. betty and i have been waiting to go to their show for ages. last time they were here, we completely missed out on them. as soon as we heard about the show, they had already sold out. so this year, with the new album, we decided we would definitely go.

after getting tickets, i left for muffin spa day at bliss spa at the w hotel, which had just opened in july. it is on the 4th floor and is oh-so-blissful. there were the four of us, me, muffinslut, murdock muffin, and blueberry muffin. we were there for 3 hours filled with relaxation and pampering. it was lovely. we plan to go back soon!

while still in our very blissful moments, we decided to get a piece of heaven and go to kirala's for sushi. most of our favorite characters including louis the bartender and conrad, one of the sushi chefs. it was an absolute smurftastic day! ;)

betty leaving... for 2 months

my partner in crime and the most perpetually late person i know, is leaving today for 2 months in asia. she will hit malaysia for a wedding, taiwan and hong kong to visit family/friends, and japan to visit kazuki and others. she's also making a stop in new york for a few days. it must be nice to have summers off. i'm sad that she's going without me and that she'll be gone. :(

our new partner in crime, spike, is also leaving tonight. only she will be gone for 1 week to the pink beach house across the country. and that won't be as bad for pre-occupying myself. after all, i have the kiddies to hang out with. spike and i will be hanging out this summer and will always be on time for everything! imagine the concept of not being 1-2 hours late to an event?! it's a thrill thinking about it since it's so rare that we arrive anywhere on time with betty alongside us.

last night we celebrated by chowing down at kiralas (betty's fav sushi restaurant in berkeley) and dancing the night away at popscene. louis was our guest star last night. hmmm, i wonder if betty is done packing yet?

we actually got there on time. and, got rock star parking too. good thing, because it started raining. the 3 of us had a great time as we always do. we sat at the bar the entire time. we had drinks, food, and met a lot of random people stopping at the bar. including a 25 y/o australian named david. it was his birthday that night so we bought him a drink. then we went to 330 ritch to check out the guy from ride. we caught it at the very last song and then it was time to go home. the music was very sleepy, much like that of ride. adam from australia chatted it up for quite a while with david from australia. i think adam had fun talking about his hometown... he mentioned the jets saying something along the lines of melbourners sucking and their town was better or something? oh who cares...
oh, i forgot to mention the caesars. as i expected, they didn't remember us from two years ago and driving them all around san francisco for their very first time, or so they said. not that kiki & i approached them that night or anything. nothing happened that night and i am very glad about it. she talked to them the following night. the music was okay, it's strange to actually recognize their songs though. maybe i'm still in shock but they're total divas now...

spike's potluck

alex had a mid-quarter dinner party last night. i brought sangria and some cheese & crackers. alex had strawberry daiquiris and kumquat water. christine (from ips) came with margaritas. i met sanford, ena & sir philip, tahu, keira & her husband. erin (a former ir student), curtiss and danny, whom i'd previously met were there also. it was a fun group.

alex prepared the following menu of which was... as my 4 y/o nephew would say, yummy in my tummy! with a swirling hand gesture over his stomach.

spicy pineapple slices--add vanilla ice cream (it's delish!)

stuffed peppers--she substituted portabello mushrooms for the octopus

when alex throws a party, she throws a party! still waiting for betty's recipe for her spicy bell pepper shrimp dish... i imagine that will take a while unless one of us physically watches her send it on her computer.

it was my 6th tcs show, second time at slim's. last night, they recorded the show on a cd that you could pre-purchase and pick up after the show. at first, we didn't really care much about it. but half way through the show and being our obnoxious girlie selves, we decided to get the cd so we can hear ourselves laughing in the background in one of the quiet slow songs.

i finally met up with eddy (aka marie) and her husband john from sacramento. see october 2004 post. betty and i met this couple at our first tcs show at the troubadour in march 2004. betty and eddy bumped into each other and was profusely apologizing to each other. then, i think it was john that said, only at a trashcan sinatras show would people be arguing about apologizing back and forth to each other. that brought on a flutter of emails back and forth on whether they or we would be at the next trashcan show. they are a very lovely couple.

then there was creepy brian. he's at every show creeping around me. he always ends up next to me or in the vicinity of my location, just staring over at me. at the first slim's show, we were downstairs and he was to the left just creeping around me, not saying hello or anything but staring at me as if he were speaking to me in esp. last night was no different. for some reason, he ended up upstairs in the opposite corner to us. he'd lost some weight and betty didn't recognize him but i knew his creepiness. then she heard his rapsy creepy voice and confirmed it was him. again, he didn't say hello but just stared. guys should know that this is NOT okay.

alex made friends with the recording guys and after a brief discussion on hippies, he took it upon himself to give us 2 extra copies of the cd, free! sometimes, it is just so cool to be us... ;)

overall, the show was good. they played freetime so we didn't have to shout it out to request it. after having met frank from the cafe du nord show, i couldn't look at him sing. so i watched john douglas the entire time.

waiting for the siren's call

ted & i left to pick betty up at 4:30p. she was supposed to come over at 4p but unsurprisingly, she didn't show up. instead, she called at 4p to tell me that her car didn't start. so we ended up picking her up. sometimes, i feel like she does this on purpose? hmmm...

so, we're on 880 heading to oakland and we're actually almost there and i get this phone call. it's alex, and she says... am i driving right behind you or what? then i looked in my rear-view mirror and it's alex in her saturn. so we just caravan'd it the rest of the way.

the chemical brother's were the opening gig. they mixed it up for about an hour and a half. after the first half hour, i was chemical brother'd out! i started to fall asleep towards the end. but when new order started, i had to stand up. we all stood up at the front of the balcony and danced away. bernard sounded fantastic live. new order played for about an hour and a half and played one encore. blue monday. they added kylie minogue's vocals at the end from her 'can't get you out of my head' rendition to blue monday. it was fabulous!
